How to Hang a Pasture Gate: Red River Arenas Installation Guide

•

Installing a pasture gate correctly starts with a sturdy, properly supported hinge post, correct hinge placement, and a gate designed to fit your opening. Red River Arenas GL light-duty and GH heavy-duty galvanized pasture gates include installation hardware, and both feature a bottom hinge welded onto the gate.

1. Start with a strong gate post

A gate post carries the weight of the gate and the forces of repeated opening and closing. Use a properly engineered, set and braced gate post suitable for the gate length, weight, soil, and application.

Important: Neither Red River Arenas T-posts nor our galvanized panel posts are designed for hanging pasture gates. Never hang a pasture gate directly from a livestock panel. Use a separate, properly supported hinge post.

2. Measure the opening and plan the swing

Our gates are manufactured to fit inside their stated opening. For example, a 10-foot gate is slightly shorter than 10 feet so it fits a 10-foot opening. Check the actual clearance and supplied hardware before setting posts.

For a gate that swings both ways, mount the hinges in the middle of the set post. For a gate that opens one way and folds flat against the fence, mount them on the outside of the post, toward the direction the gate should fold back. Check for obstructions throughout the intended swing.

3. Set and brace the hinge post

Set the post plumb and provide adequate foundation and bracing for the gate. Allow any concrete to cure as required before hanging the gate. Choose the hinge mounting side based on the swing direction planned above.

4. Install the supplied hinge hardware

Both GL and GH gates include their hinge hardware and have the bottom hinge welded onto the gate. The GL and GH hardware differs, so use the parts supplied with your specific gate. Install and secure the top and bottom assemblies according to their actual design; do not assume a generic hinge-pin orientation applies to every configuration.

5. Hang and level the gate

  1. Support the gate safely at the desired height.
  2. Engage the welded lower hinge with its matching post hardware.
  3. Install and secure the upper hinge hardware.
  4. Adjust until the gate is level and swings without binding.
  5. Check ground clearance over the entire swing.

Use adequate lifting assistance for heavy gates. Never work under an unsupported gate.

6. Secure the chain keeper latch

After hanging and leveling the gate, secure its chain keeper latch at the receiving post. Confirm the chain holds the gate securely without lifting or forcing the gate. The latch is separate from the welded lower hinge.

7. Test before use

Open and close the gate through its intended swing. Check the post, hinge hardware, fasteners, clearance, and latch. Inspect periodically, especially after heavy livestock use.

Need access through a panel system?

For compatible portable and modular panel enclosures, consider Red River Arenas Walk-Through Gates instead of a traditional post-mounted pasture gate.
