Horse & Cattle Panel Buying Guide
From riding arenas and round pens to cattle working pens and rough stock setups, Red River Arenas offers galvanized livestock panels in several heights, lengths and duty levels. This guide will help you choose the right panels for your animals and the way you will use them.
Find the Right Panels for Your Setup
Start with your animals, the amount of livestock pressure and the layout you need. Then compare panel height, tubing, steel gauge, bracing and the complete delivered package.
Choose Panels by Duty Level
Light-Duty Panels
Choose lighter panels for lower-pressure horse and arena applications where handling and budget are priorities.
- PEL Series: Economy light-duty, 5 feet tall.
- PL Series: Light-duty, 5 feet tall, for riding arenas, round pens and lower-pressure horse setups.
Both series use six 1-1/4-inch, 18-gauge horizontal bars. These are not the choice for heavy cattle work.
Medium-Duty Panels
Choose medium-duty panels for regular ranch and arena use, including roping arenas, round pens and working pens.
- PM Series: 5 feet tall with six 1-1/4-inch, 16-gauge horizontal bars.
- PMT Series: 6 feet tall with seven 1-1/4-inch, 16-gauge horizontal bars.
Choose the height that fits your animals and the activity inside the enclosure.
Heavy & Extreme-Duty Panels
Choose heavier construction for demanding livestock areas, cattle working pens, horse stalls and rough stock applications.
- PEH Series: Economy heavy-duty, 5 feet tall.
- PH Series: Heavy-duty, 5 feet tall, with steel dome caps and mud legs.
- PHT Series: Heavy-duty, 6 feet tall.
- PBT Bull Tough: Extreme heavy-duty, 6 feet tall, for bulls, bison, buffalo and rough stock.

Choosing the Right Height and Length
Five-foot panels suit many horse, cattle, arena and round pen applications. Six-foot panels provide additional height for taller horses and more demanding setups. Consider the duty level as well as the height.
- 10-foot panels: Easier to handle and follow curves more closely.
- 12-foot panels: A balance between coverage, weight and handling.
- 16-foot panels: Cover more distance with fewer connections, but require more room and help to move.
Available lengths vary by series. Measure your layout and allow room for gates before choosing a package.
Tubing, Steel Gauge and Bracing
Compare the complete construction of similarly sized panels. Tubing dimensions, steel gauge, brace design, legs and total weight all matter. A lower steel gauge number generally means thicker steel. Check the bars and legs separately because they can use different gauges.
PEH, PH and PHT panels use 1-1/2-inch, 14-gauge horizontal bars. PBT Bull Tough panels step up to 2-inch, 13-gauge horizontal bars for extreme-duty applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PEH and PH panels?
Both are 5 feet tall with six 1-1/2-inch, 14-gauge horizontal bars and chain connections. PEH uses 1-1/2-inch round, 14-gauge legs and form-fitted crimped braces, without leg caps or mud legs. PH uses 1-1/2-inch square, 16-gauge legs, 14-gauge cope-cut braces, steel dome caps and mud legs. PEH is the economy heavy-duty option; PH adds the leg design, bracing and features listed above.
Which panels should I choose for sheep or goats?
The PG-10 Series is designed for smaller livestock. It is 48 inches tall with seven bars for sheep and goat pens and goat roping arenas.
Can I use the same panel series for horses and cattle?
Several series can be used with horses and cattle, but the right choice depends on livestock pressure and the layout. A riding arena and a cattle working pen can require different construction. Call us to discuss your animals and intended use.
Are gates and posts included with a panel package?
Only when the selected package specifically lists them as included. Check the quantity, panel length and included parts before ordering.
Where can I see the panels on video?
The matching YouTube videos are in the product photo galleries. See the PEH panel video or the PH panel video to take a closer look at the construction.
