8 Questions You Should Ask Before Purchasing an Arena
Before investing in a roping or riding arena, make sure you understand the layout, panel construction, included equipment, and delivery requirements. Those details affect how the arena works for you and what it will cost to complete your setup.
At Red River Arenas, we want customers to feel comfortable with their purchase. Here are eight questions to ask us and any other arena supplier before you order.
1. What is the actual size of the arena?
Ask whether the advertised dimensions refer to the usable arena space or the overall footprint. Specifically, do the stated width and length include the roping boxes, return alley, and holding pens, or do those areas require additional space outside the arena?
Request a layout that clearly shows the arena dimensions and the placement of those additional areas. When comparing quotes, put the drawings side by side so you know how much usable space each package provides.
2. Are the roping boxes inside or outside of the arena?
Box placement affects the room available for roping and riding. Boxes positioned inside the arena take up part of that space, while outside boxes can leave more of the main arena available.
If you plan to use your arena for multiple events, ask how the boxes and gates are arranged and whether the layout allows you to close off the boxes when needed.

3. How heavy, tall, and long are the panels?
Compare the specifications of the actual panels included in each quote:
- Height and length: Compare panels of the same dimensions.
- Tubing size and steel gauge: Ask about both the legs and the horizontal rails.
- Panel weight: Request the approximate weight of each panel.
- Construction: Compare the rails, braces, connections, and leg design.
A lower steel gauge number means a thicker tubing wall when comparing the same gauge system. Total panel weight also depends on tubing size, panel dimensions, and construction.

4. What is the difference between painted, powder-coated, and galvanized steel?
The finish affects corrosion protection and maintenance:
- Painted steel: Paint provides a protective barrier. Damage that exposes bare steel should be addressed to help prevent rust.
- Powder-coated steel: Powder coating also provides a protective barrier. Surface preparation, coating quality, and the steel underneath affect its performance.
- Galvanized steel: A zinc coating helps protect the steel against corrosion. The coating method, exposure, and maintenance affect its service life.

5. What comes with the arena package, especially behind the chute?
Request an itemized equipment list. Confirm which panels, gates, roping boxes, chutes, and return-alley components are included, along with any optional upgrades.
For a roping arena, pay particular attention to the area behind the chute. Ask whether the quoted layout uses panels, a sheet-metal leadup, or a chute extension, and which features are included with that equipment.

6. Do posts come with the arena package?
Long runs of connected panels need posts and proper support. Ask which posts, clamps, and other connections are recommended for your layout and whether they are included in the quoted price or purchased separately.

7. What are the delivery and setup details?
Before ordering, confirm:
- What type of truck will deliver your equipment.
- Whether the truck can reach and maneuver at your delivery location.
- What delivery timing to expect and how to report dates when you cannot receive the order.
- Who will assemble the arena and install the posts.
Red River Arenas delivers arena packages but does not provide installation or setup. Plan your site preparation, help, and installation equipment before delivery.
8. Who is responsible for unloading the truck?
Red River Arenas customers are responsible for unloading their equipment. Our delivery service does not include an unloading crew or unloading equipment.
Confirm the unloading requirements for your order in advance, including bundle weights and the equipment needed to handle them. Have suitable equipment and people ready when the truck arrives.
